Dan is many things, ranging from a pessimistic nihilist who believes in God, to a self-loathing narcissist with a penchant for misanthropy. At the outset of Running on Empty, however, Dan is a hopeless romantic who just lost both hope and romance. Soon thereafter, he carves out a new life purpose, finding a greater amount of solace in single life than he ever did while in a relationship. But is this new attitude real, or merely a front to cover-up his broken heart?
Though Dan is something of a loner, his innate thirst for adventure keeps him involved in the frequent misadventures of Jake and D-Man. Dan often serves to temper the more outrageous ideas and actions of his two peers, though he often finds a great amount of satisfaction in destructive activities and other hijinks.
